National Merit Scholarship Program

    The National Merit® Scholarship Program, conducted annually by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), is an academic competition for recognition and college undergraduate scholarships.  The program is open to all U.S. high school students who meet published entry requirements.  Scholarship winners are chosen on the basis of their abilities, skills, and accomplishments-without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference.  Established in 1955, National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) is an independent, not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance.  The operational objectives and continuing long-range purposes of the National Merit Program are to:

    1) identify and honor exceptionally able U.S. high school students and encourage them to pursue rigorous college studies;

    2) provide efficient and effective scholarship program management for corporations, company foundations, colleges and universities, and other organizations that wish to sponsor scholarships for outstanding participants in the competition;

    3) promote wider and deeper respect for learning in general and for extremely talented individuals in particular;

    4) stimulate increased support for the education of scholastically able students

The National Merit Program could not operate without the cooperation of thousands of educators in U.S. high schools who provide the opportunity for their students to participate
