STANTON COMMUNITY SCHOOL BULLETIN NOVEMBER 1, 2019

NOVEMBER 5TH IS ELECTION DAY

Stanton Community School prepares students for success with help from the locally elected citizens who serve on our school board. Four candidates are running for two open seats.

November 5th is Election Day. Don’t forget to cast your vote to help determine the direction of Stanton Community School.

For information about how to register to vote or where your polling place is located, contact the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office or your county auditor.

Polls open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m. on November 5th—students need you to vote.

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

Science Fair Judges Needed

The Corner Conference Science Fair will be held at Fremont-Mills on Monday, November 25th. Each school is asked to bring five judges to help evaluate the projects. Typically, judging takes place in the morning with lunch provided. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Mrs. Erickson ([email protected]), or Mrs. Irr ([email protected]).

STEM BEST Award

Stanton became one of thirteen school districts statewide to receive the 2019-2020 Governor's STEM BEST Program grant. Stanton's grant is designed to encourage and promote school and business partnerships in Stanton, Red Oak, and beyond. Students and teachers will be working with business and industry leaders on various projects and curriculum updates related to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Manufacturing. Once the program is in place, Stanton will serve as a model to share unique perspectives, strengths, demographics and program focus with other schools throughout Iowa. The staff and community are excited to get started! Stay tuned for news and upcoming events.

Veterans Day Program

The Jr/Sr Government class is again honoring Veterans with a Veterans Day Program at the High School gym on Monday, November 11th, at 10:00 a.m. A special invitation to known veterans in the area has been sent via mail, however, we want to extend that invitation to all community members in Stanton and surrounding communities. This year we will focus on the Vietnam War Era, with slide show presentations of local veterans who served during that time.

Also at 8:45 a.m. veterans and their spouses are invited to breakfast at the High School cafeteria sponsored by FMTC. If you wish to attend please RSVP to the High School Office at (712) 829-2162 by November 7th.

4th Graders Helping Veterans

In honor of Veteran's Day, the Stanton 4th Graders will be collecting some items to help veterans in Kansas City.  Last year the students sent cards to this organization, and this year we decided to go a step further. We are collecting new chap sticks, hand/feet warmers, and hats. If you have any items you would like to donate, please drop them off at the elementary or give to a 4th grade student. The deadline for this is Thursday, November 7th. For more information, visit the link below.

ATHLETICS.

Viqueen Volleyball

On Monday, October 28th, the Viqueen team traveled to Corning to take on the Southwest Valley Timberwolves in a regional quarter-final match. The Viqueens fought hard but dropped the match in four sets with scores of 22-25, 20-25, 25-22 and 16-25. Their season came to an end with a much-improved record of 21-15. Congratulations on a great season Viqueens–we are very proud of how you represented our school and community!

Thank You

The Viqueen volleyball team and coaches would like to express their appreciation for the strong support the team received this season. Thank you to all of the parents who helped provide meals/snacks for the team during weekend tournament play and after games. A special “Thank You” to Emily Irr, Ashley McDonald, and Amy Tibben who served as line judges during the season, to Jo Peterson and Rick and Tammy Boyer and Christi Elwood for helping at the score table during matches and to our bus drivers who made sure we always arrived and came home safely. A huge “Thank You”

to our outstanding team managers, Carlee Culbertson, Kaitlyn Bruce, Faith Ogletree and Ashley Henneman, and all junior varsity and junior high team members who helped with stat taking, videotaping and line judging during the regular season and regional play. Thank you to the Stanton Booster Club for providing pizza to the team after Parents’ Night and for providing each player a photo button. We cannot thank Al Thole enough for his generous donations and support of the volleyball program. Thank you to KCSI and KMA for their coverage of our regional contests. Thank you to Mike and Valerie Vorhies for their delicious hot breakfasts that they provided to the team every Saturday while traveling to tournaments and to our moms who took the time to make sure the girls always had a “surprise” waiting for them in their locker every game day!  A huge “shout out” needs to go to our student section who did an amazing job supporting the team at home and away games. We are blessed to be a part of such a wonderful community and the positive support and encouragement we have received is very much appreciated.

Viking Football

The Vikings' 5 game win streak ended last Friday as did their season. They would like to thank all their parents, friends, family and fans for the great support throughout the season this fall. The team would also like to thank all those helpers from both the Stanton and Essex communities for assisting on the sidelines, press box, and the school office.

Junior High Football

The JH football team finished their season with a 16-32 loss to the East Mills Wolverines last Monday night in Essex. The loss brought their record to 2-4 on the season. The boys showed improvement all season long against some tough opponents and played harder than what their record shows. Great season Vikes!

PRINCIPAL

This week we would like to recognize Jody Druivenga. Jody is currently our elementary secretary for her 24th year. She has also been the HS volleyball coach for 11 years, 8 of them as head.   She has been the JH volleyball (13 years) and JH girls track coach for 4 years. Jody and her husband Sean, have 3 children, Dilan, Dakkota, and Devin all who have graduated from Stanton. We appreciate all Jody does for all our students and the variety of duties she handles. Her efforts sure help lead to the success of our students. We are glad you are a Viqueen!!
